The ENS visa program allows employers to sponsor existing or potential employees for permanent residence. There are two streams under the ENS: Temporary Residence Transition stream and Direct Entry stream. Both streams require the employer/sponsor to nominate the employee for an MLTSSL occupation that appears on the Combined list. Only MLTSSL occupations are eligible for this visa UNLESS the applicant held or applied for their 457 visa before 18 April 2017. Once the ENS nomination application has been lodged, a Subclass 186 visa application may then be lodged. 

ENS / 186 visa – Temporary Residence Transition stream

Under this stream, the applicant must have worked for the sponsor/employer for at least two years in the same occupation on a 457  visa.  After two years of employment on a 457 visa, the sponsor may then nominate the employee for permanent residence.
 

General Requirements:

• Nominated for an MLTSSL occupation that appears on the Combined list UNLESS the applicant held or applied for their 457 visa before 18 April 2017, then any occupation is acceptable
• Competent English unless exempt (for example: IELTS test results of at least 6in each component)
•  Under 50 years of age if you held or applied for a 457 visa on or before 18 April 2017; or, under 45 if you did not hold a 457 visa before 18 April 2017
•  If the person held or applied for a 457 visa before 18 April 2017, they must have worked for the sponsoring employer in the same nominated occupation for at least two years while holding a 457 or 482 visa
• If the person did not hold or apply for a 457 visa before 18 April 2017, they must have worked for the sponsoring employer in the same nominated occupation for at least three years while holding a 457 or 482 visa.

ENS / 186 visa – Direct Entry stream

         Under this stream, the applicant does not have to work for the sponsor/employer for any specific period of time. The two stage employer  nomination and 186 visa application also applies for the Direct Entry stream.
 

General Requirements:

•  Nominated for an MLTSSL occupation that appears on the Combined list.
• Competent English unless exempt (for example: IELTS test results of at least 6 in each component)
• Under 45 years of age
• Positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. Assessing authorities are third parties that the government has designated to test skills. The complete list of assessing authorities for each occupation may be found on the Combined list.

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) / 187 visa is only available for those applicants who already hold a temporary 457/482 work visa and have worked for thier employer for at least 3 years. The program is closed to most new applicants as it was replaced by the Regional 491/494 visa programs.
